How to sell content online

Selling content means people pay you for something you made — an ebook, a video lesson, a template pack, a recorded training, a paid community. The file, video or session is the product.

Most people who try this get stuck in the same place: they finish the product, post about it, and nothing happens. The missing piece is almost never the file. It is that no stranger can understand who it is for, or pay for it without messaging you first.

If you meant content that sells an offer rather than the product itself, read what content selling means.

What you can actually sell

FormatBest whenTypical price (GHS)
Ebook or guideYou can write one specific outcome down in 20–40 pages50 – 250
Video lessons / mini courseThe skill needs to be shown, not described150 – 800
Template or toolkitBuyers want the finished thing, not the teaching50 – 300
Recorded training + Q&AYou already ran it live and it worked200 – 1,000
Paid community or monthly accessPeople need ongoing help, not one file20 – 100 / month

Price against the outcome, not the page count. A 22-page guide that stops someone losing GHS 500 a month is worth more than a 200-page book about a topic.

What has to exist before anyone can pay

  • A named buyer — not "entrepreneurs", but "people selling skincare on WhatsApp who keep answering the same price question".
  • One outcome they get, stated in their words.
  • A price on the page. No "DM for price".
  • A page that takes mobile money and card, so a stranger can pay at 11pm without you.
  • Automatic delivery, so the file or link arrives without you sending it.
  • One place all your content points to.

If any of these is missing, more posting will not fix it. That is the single most common reason a finished digital product goes quiet.

Getting paid without a card

In Ghana and much of West Africa, most buyers do not pay with a card. If your checkout only accepts cards, you lose the sale at the last step even when the buyer wanted it.

MethodWhat buyers useWhat you need
Mobile moneyMTN MoMo, Telecel, AirtelTigoA Paystack account linked to your MoMo or bank
CardVisa, Mastercard, international buyersThe same Paystack account
Bank transferLarger or corporate purchasesManual confirmation — slower, more chasing
Manual MoMo to your numberSmall, trust-based salesYou confirm and deliver by hand every time

Manual collection works until it doesn't. The moment you get five buyers in a day, or a buyer at midnight, unconfirmed payments start costing you sales.

Delivery that does not need you online

  • The download or access link is sent the moment payment clears.
  • Video content sits behind a link that only buyers get, not a public post.
  • The buyer gets a receipt with what they bought and how to reach you.
  • You can see who paid, when, and for what — without scrolling WhatsApp.

Why most digital products go quiet

What it looks likeWhat is actually wrongFix
Views on the launch post, no salesThe post announced a product instead of naming a problemPost the problem and the cost of leaving it alone, then link once
People ask the price and disappearThe price arrived before the outcome was clearPut price and outcome on the same page, and send them there
A few sales at launch, then nothingNothing points to the page after launch weekKeep two or three problem posts running to the same link
Buyers pay but complainDelivery is manual, so access is lateAutomate delivery and receipts

Common questions

How do I sell content online with no audience?

Sell to the people already in your DMs and WhatsApp groups first. Ten buyers who paid tell you more than 10,000 followers. Once you know which version people pay for, content becomes worth producing.

What does selling content mean?

It means the content is the product — someone pays for the file, the video or the access. That is different from content selling, where free content moves people toward buying something else.

Can I sell content without a website?

Yes. You need one page with the offer, the price and a working payment button. A full website is optional and usually a distraction at the start.

How do I stop people sharing my file for free?

You cannot fully. Price for the outcome and the access to you, not the file, and keep the valuable part where access can be controlled — a community, live sessions, updates.

How much should I charge for my first ebook?

Enough that buying it means something. GHS 50–150 for a first guide is normal in Ghana. Free and GHS 10 both attract people who will never buy again.

How Content to Sales handles this

Content to Sales gives you the paid part of this without extra tools: a business page with a mini shop, prices on the page, mobile money and card checkout through your own Paystack account, order records and automatic follow-up. You keep the money — it lands in your account, not ours.

Before you build anything, run the free sales audit. It tells you whether your blockage is attention, the offer or the buying path, so you build the part that is actually broken. You can also read how to sell ebooks online for the ebook-specific version of this.
